Soy wax is generally considered safe to burn, producing less soot than paraffin wax and posing no known significant health hazards under normal use. However, exposure to fumes from overheated wax can cause mild nose and throat irritation, and contact with hot liquid wax can cause burns. To burn soy wax candles safely, ensure good ventilation, trim the wick to .63 cm to prevent excessive smoke, and avoid overheating the wax.
Hazards & Precautions
Overheated Wax: Overheating soy wax can produce fumes that may cause irritation to the respiratory tract, nose, and throat.
Hot Wax Contact: Contact with hot liquid soy wax can cause burns to the skin and eyes. In case of skin contact, cool the affected area immediately with cool water and seek medical attention if burns are severe.
Ingestion: Ingesting soy wax is not expected to cause any significant harm.
Thermal Decomposition: In case of fire or incomplete combustion, the wax can decompose to produce irritating fumes, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide.
Safe Burning Practices
Ventilation: Ensure the area is well-ventilated by opening windows or using an air purifier to reduce the concentration of any airborne pollutants.
Wick Trimming: Trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch before each burn to prevent excessive flame height, smoke, and soot.
Proper Burn Time: Allow the candle to burn long enough for the melted wax pool to reach the edges of the container (about 1 hour per inch of diameter) to prevent tunneling.
Safety First: Place candles on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, children, and pets.
